Abstract:

The relative merits are compared of a flushmounted circularly polarized antenna and an externally-mounted linearly polarized antenna for use as the microwave radiator on the Courier Satellite. The antenna design criteria that form the basis for this comparison are presented, as are the physical designs, patterns, and impedance properties of the two antennas. These data indicate that the linearly polarized antenna has certain advantages in terms of radiation pattern, performance, and reliability because of its relative simplicity. A theoretical comparison was also made which indicates a preference for the linearly polarized antenna. Author
