Abstract:

An investigation and development program is re ported, conducted to modify or further develop the SurFax system of pavement condition photog raphy so it would faithfully record in a form highly usable for analysis and record purposes, cracking, rutting, raveling, bleeding and such other flexible airfield pavement defects or characteristics as would be of interest to pave ment engineers of the Navy Bureau of Yards and Docks. In general, the investigation and development was concerned with such factors as film types, lighting, subject enhancement tech niques, vehicle speed, film travel, data reduc tion, positional control, and techniques for ob taining three-dimensional records. The indivi dual and combined effects of these factors were studied in the light of their providing a record of flexible pavement defects which was superior and more useful than the initial SurFax record. The results of this investigation and develop ment program have led to the preliminary design of a modified SurFax system which will secure the desired data on flexible airfield pts. Author
