Investigations have shown that it is possible to develop a method of producing pure hydrogen from ammonia vapor in a small, lightweight portable generator. A prototype generator was built and successfully operated. Pure hydrogen was separated from cracked ammonia by means of a diffusion membrane. The unit contained proprietary ammonia oxidation catalyst, an integral battery operated ignite for starting the process and used an aspiratory to supply the air necessary for com bustion to furnish the process energy require ments. Investigations on hydrocarbon fuels have shown that it is possible to reform No. 55 Naphtha or Propane while withdrawing pure product hydrogen from the reaction zone. The withdrawal of the hydrogen increases the gross hydrogen production of the reformer. Author
