Abstract:

Research was continued on a study of the physi cal processes which govern the ignition, by rapid compression, of hydraulic fluids. Tem perature traces were obtained in the 1.5 inch I.D. test section for a number of test condi tions. A test apparatus was developed for the study of the combustion of liquid films which provides reproducible data. The results of testing with this apparatus indicate that thicker films are more readily ignited. However, tests employing a fuel saturated wick in the gas stream still leave a strong suspicion that drop lets are being formed from the surface of the film making the general applicability of the data somewhat doubtful. A preliminary analysis neglecting frictional effects and heat losses was developed for the liquid charging process. Also see AD-417 599 to 417 606 and AD-417 608 to 417 614. Author
