Abstract:

General expressions for complex nonlinear sus ceptibilities in the presence of damping have been derived which describe simultaneously parametric, maser and Raman maser effects. If the applied fields are near resonances of the atomic system and have a magnitude equal to or larger than the linewidths, 0different ef fects become inextricably mixed. It is still possible to consider the total polarization, which is a mixture of all linear and nonlinear effects, as a source term reacting with the electromagnetic fields. Joint equations of the dynamical variables of the modes and the density matrix elements of the general nonlinear medium can be written down, although explicit steady state solutions require the retention of only a few terms in a Fourier series expansion, trun cation of non-resonant terms, and other approximations.
