Abstract:

A general analytical solution is developed for the investigation of deflection and bending moments of a rigid pavement for the case of a static load applied at the interior of the pavement at some distance from any edge. The solution is based upon the concept of a dense liquid foundation and a distribution of the wheel load over a circular area, the general solution reduces to the Westergaard solution for determination of maximum deflection and maximum bending moment for radii of relative load distribution less than one. A relationship is also developed to permit the investigation of the influence of multiple wheel loads. The solution, although utilized to investigate specifically the behavior of rigid airfield pavements, is equally applicable to the investi gation of rigid highway pavements. Author
