Abstract:

The problem considered is that of a cylindrical shell composed of a semi-infinite length shell joined to a finite length shell of smaller thick ness, subjected to internal pressure. The finite length shell is assumed to join smoothly either at the inner or the outer surface of the thicker shell. Use is made of the general solution of the differential equation governing the displace ment perpendicular to the center surface of the shell. The constants of integration are evalu ated by imposing the conditions that the bending moment and shearing force are zero at the free end of the shell and that the displacement, slope, bending moment and shearing force are continuous at the joining of the two portions of the shell.
