Abstract:

Ionospheric refraction studies are reviewed, and the effect of refraction errors on the analysis of Doppler shift data from artificial earth satellites is discussed. A method of correcting for first order error is presented, based on an earlier analysis wherein the ionospheric refrac tion error is expressed in terms of powers of the inverse of the transmitter frequency. Both digi tal and analog correction systems are described, and comparative results are shown. Extraction of the ionospheric error information in terms of the power series is also described and results are presented as analog recorder charts and plots of computed error quantities. Magnitudes of noted errors are reviewed and noise problems are considered. Recommendations are made regarding equipment, station location, and methods of computation. A detailed description is given of the Refraction Correction System and Refraction Error System rng from this investigation. The equipment is illustrated by diagrams and photographs. Author
