Abstract:

The objective of this research was to derive a simple expression for the mean free path in a fluid. The derivation used is strictly speaking only correct for hard sphere atoms. It is shown that low densities give the usual exponential distribution and that the high density limit, in which the atoms are supposed to be boxed in, gives rise to a mean free path equal to the reduced length of the box. Under the assumption that it is proper to make use of the general properties of the two particle correlation function some tentative conclusions are made about the behavior of the mean free path as a function of the density.
