Experimental work has been conducted on membranes and interface membraneelectrolyte properties. Reaction rates for the electrochemical oxygen reduction as well as heat and mass transfer studies have yielded interesting results regarding air breathing fuel cell electrodes. The study of the IEM-electrode interface by optical microscopy, capacity and adhesion measurements has yielded results regarding type, quality and nature of the electrolyte-electrode bond. Surface contact between the two media rather than interfacial penetration has been observed. Limiting current densities for cathodic oxygen reduction on IEM Pt black type electrolyte-electrode systems are quasi-linearly dependent on oxygen partial pressure, for the binary system O2N2, in the absence of convective flow.
