Abstract:
It is proposed to utilize alkali metal vapors to study the fundamental collisional processes leading to ionization and electronic excitation in gases behind strong shockwaves. The advantages which result from the substitution of alkali metal vapors for ordinary gases are presented and a suitable arc-heated test facility is described.
