Abstract:

Two potentially useful elements of information concerning the lognormal distribution are provided which may be helpful to persons engaged in studies concerning either the solution of queueing problems through simulation or the effects of failure characteristics on reliability. One is a very simple but flexible procedure with an example in the widely used FORTRAN computer language for generating a series of observations drawn from a logonormally distributed population. This method can provide improved realism and accuracy in the computer simulation of servicing queues when the servicetime distribution is known to be lognormal. The other is an analysis of one feature of the lognormal distribution of times-to-failure a peak in the failure rate. It provides information concerning the age at which the peak occurs, its magnitude, and certain related asymptotic properties. Author
