Abstract:

The specific electrical conductances of the aqueous battery electrolytes KOH, H2SO4, and NaCl-MgCl2 were measured as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to pressures of 60,000 lbsq in. The pressure dependencies of the activation energies of the normal and protonic conduction mechanisms in aqueous solution were determined. The results show that potassium and hydrogen ions conduct by different mechanisms, the latter by a Grotthuss-type mechanisms. Conductivity measurements have shown that the dissociation of the complex ion FeCl increases with increasing pressure whereas that of the ion-pair FeNO3 shows no pressure dependence. Author
