Abstract:

A lmiter is modeled as an ideal clipper cascaded with a bandpass filter. The nonlinear clipper characteristic is analyzed as a linear sum of sinusoids in order to determine signal modulation frequencies generated within the clipper and which pass through the filter. The representa tion leads to evaluation of modulation component amplitudes as sums of Bessel Functions, or, equivalently, as integrals of Bessel Functions. The cases of a single narrowband input, and two interfering sinusoids, are considered in detail. References to the literature concerning signalto-noise ratio calculations in systems using a limiter are listed in the references. Author
