Abstract:

An electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectrum due to trivalent iron was discovered and analyzed in single crystals of calcite. It was found that this ion is located substitution ally for calcium in this crystal to the extent of five parts peion. The spectral constants are given at temperatures varying from 1.5 K to 300 K. An interpretation for the temperature dependence of the spectral constants is given which is based on the theory of S-state ions located at sites of six-fold coordinated octa hedral symmetry. In addition to this problem, an optical absorption has been observed in a natural garnet containing iron. The spectrum is shown to be most likely due to trivalent iron located at the six-fold coordinated octahedral sites of the garnet structure. Finally, an analy sis based on the von Neumann-Wigner theorem is given for the non-intersection of Zeeman split crystal-ion terms. Author
