An experimental air transport planning facility which provides a test bed for investigating appropriate data-processing aids to the planning of transport operations is reported. The facility uses the XD-1 computer and associated equipments, teletypewriter inputs, printers, and electronic displays. Current capabilities allow the planner to determine the n 1 of missions necessary to transport a load of cargo and passengers from onload bases to offload bases. The planner can rapidly examine alternative routes and mixes of aircraft and compare the time, number of cabins, and fuel requiremstts for each alternative. The system is supported by a data base consisting of airfield, aircraft, load, route, and city files. An IBM-7090 program generates self-described files of data acceptable for input to the XD-1 programs. Tests in the XD-1 facility are expected to lead to an im proved facility utilizing the 7030 computing system and will include, in addition to current capabilities, aids to aircraft allocation, scheduling, and generation of base support requirements.
