Abstract:
At the surface of a flying apparatus, travelling in the atmosphere at greater than sonic speed, is formed an air layer of higher temperatures. It is ordinarily called thermal boundary layer. The greater the flight speed the higher is the tem perature of the boundary layer. An explanation is presented for the fact that the skin of the flying apparatus has a much lower temperature than the boundary layer of the air. The fact is that the heating process is not instantaneous. The rate of heat transfer from the air to the surface of the flying apparatus depends upon a series of factors.
