Abstract:

This paper is concerned with the effect of the flexibility of epoxy resin on the fracture of a model of a FRP laminate. The design of a model using glass rods to represent glass fibers is described, a mathematical analysis of the loads in individual rods is presented and the results of tensile tests of the model are discussed. The average ultimate strength of the models using the flexible resin was found to be 32 higher than the models using the stiff normal resin. The flexible resin models also exhibited a markedly different mode of fracture. Recommendations are made as to the merits of using flexible resins in FRP laminates. Author
