Abstract:

Interest in techniques of cooling the pistons of highly supercharged reciprocating internal com bustion engines has revealed the need for basic design information relating to heat transfer in a hollow reciprocating piston partially filled with a liquid. Analyses based on a conductive model and on a convective model for heat transfer are developed to identify the governing nondimen sional parameters. Experimental data supports the conclusion that a convective mechanism of heat transfer predominates. Two correlating equations, based on experimental data, have been obtained. These correlating equations can be used in the design of internal combustion engine pistons and valves which are cooled by cocktail shaking. An illustrative application of the correlating equa tions to the cooling of a highly supercharged diesel engine piston is presented. Author
