An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing three specific types of coherent optical components, viz., a variable phase shifter, a variable attenuator, and a variable power divider. Both theoretical and experimental studies were performed, the program of work being guided by the following basic design goals for each compo nent type. Variable phase shifter-a phase shift range of 0-180 degrees with constant transmission loss. Variable attenuator-an attenuation range of 0-30 decibels with constant phase shift. Var iable power divider-a power division range of 3-10 decibels with the outputs in phase. Various techniques were theoretically analyzed for each type of component, the most promising method being experimentally evaluated in each case. Coherent light of wavelength 6328 Angstroms from a He-Ne gas laser was used in evaluating the performance ofxperimental components de veloped. The phase distortion and insertion loss characteristics of each experimental component type were considered. Author
