The main problem considered and solved is the minimum-weight design of a horizontal I-beam of constant web and variable flange thickness. The beam is simply supported at one end and built in at the other and is designed to with stand in plastic flow a concentrated vertical load of fixed intensity moving slowly from one end to the other. To introduce the general techniques employed, a few discrete versions of the problem are first presented and solved as linear- programming problems.
