Abstract:

Integrated descriptions of the problem of signal detection, the optimum linear filtering process, a coherent optical system which accomplishes this filtering process, and a technique for realizing the required complex filter are given. Experi mental results show that the theory is valid. The appendixes give a treatment of the Fourier transforming property of lenses which is general enough that complete optical systems can be evaluated on the basis of frequency response and region of space-invariant operation. The experimental results obtained to date indicate that this technique provides an excellent two dimensional filtering capability that will play a key role in problems such as shape recognition and signal detection.
