Abstract:

Integrated descriptions of the problem of signal detection, the optimum linear filtering process, a coherent optical system which accomplishes this filtering process, and a technique for realizing the required complex filter are reported. Ex perimental results show that the theory is valid. A treatment of the Fourier transforming property of lenses which is general enough that complete optical systems can be evaluated on the basis of frequency response and region of space invariant operation is included. The experimental results obtained to date indicate that this technique provides an excellent two-dimensional filtering capability that will play a key role in problems such as shape recognition and signal detection.
