Oxy-acetylene torch test studies on a series of experimental phenolic resins are described along with those conducted on a number of commercial ablation type materials. A phenolic-polyamide copolymer was found to be the most effective for insulation effectiveness. The potential of silicone rubber as the matrix for an effective elastomeric insulator was demonstrated.
