Abstract:

The stability of an inviscid fluid between rotating cylinders with an axial flow is considered under the small gap approximation. When the axial flow is small compared to the rotational velocity, a new perturbation method differing in several respects from the conventional method was devised. It was found that the presence of the axial flow has a stabilizing effect, and that the correction to the growth rates of the pure rotation case is of second-order in the axial to rotational velocity ratio. Furthermore, the instabilities are confined to only a finite range of wave numbers.
