The principal purposes of this paper are to analyze rigorously the eigenvalue problem, to demonstrate existence and uniqueness of solutions, and to discuss certain aspects of the qualitative behavior of solutions. The formulation of the eigenvalue problem from physical laws, and the subsequent analysis of this problem will be such that no special form for the chemical-reactionrate law, or chemical source function, need be assumed. In particular, the results will be applicable to the phenomenolocial mass-action law for a one-step, reversible, chemical reaction involving an arbitrary number of species, in arbitrary initial ratios, and with specific reaction-rate coefficients dependent upon temperature in the form of the Arrhenius laws.
