The problem of how a current layer diffuses through a plasma is treated. A one-dimensional unsteady motion is considered in which, at time t0, a uniform gas of finite electrical conduc tivity fills a semi-infinite region. This half space is in turn bounded by essentially a semi infinite vacuum region containing a uniform mag netic field B sub zero transverse to the direc tion of motion x. Basically, the problem is to determine in time the growth and behavior of the current layer which divides the vacuum region that is sustained by the magnetic pressure from the plasma region where the static pressure is finite.
