Abstract:

Whereas the specific heat expansivity of argon have been measured as a function of temperature over most of the solid range, determinations of compressibility are less comprehensive. Com pressibility measurements have been made in the range 65 to 79 K by two methods-piston dis placement and ultrasonic resonance. These re sults are in good agreement at 65 K, but diverge at 77 K by about 33. In view of the importance of an accurate knowledge compressibility, the isothermal compressibility of solid argon has been measured by an optical method, based on the spectrometric method of minimum deviation.
