Condensation of 4,4-dihydroxydiphenylether with dichlorosilanes has resulted in polymers of relatively high molecular weight. A crosslinking reaction occurred simultaneously precluding measurement of the exact degree of polymerization, but monomer purity has been shown to be of critical importance. A quarter-replicate factorial experiment to assess the effects of changes in temperature, reaction time, and reactant concentrations has been completed. Alkaline hydrolysis of 4,4-dibromodiphenylether results in a mixture of as many as eleven different, organic compounds. The experimental results point the way toward elimination of some of these compounds as by products in the synthesis of 4,4-dihydroxydi phenylether. It is possible to form 4,4-dihy droxydiphenylether through intermolecular dehydration of hydroquinone. Hydroxy substituted polyphenylethers might also result from similar reactions.
