The free vibrations of finite cylindrical shells are investigated. With the aid of a number of simplifying assumptions, a frequency equation based on the known characteristic functions for beams with any combination of boundary conditions is obtained. Experimental results for frequency spectra and mode shapes of a cylinder fixed on one edge and free on the other are in good agreement with both Rayleighs inextensional theory and the approximate frequency equation. Structural damping coefficients obtained for the test cylinders are compared with those of previous investigations.
