Abstract:

The auditory-area cerebral cortex of the cat was mapped by means of the method of evoked poten tials. Complex repetitive acoustic stimuli were used, which when presented to human Ss yield a pitch related to the periodicity of stimulus envelope fluctuation. The results of the present study do not support the hypothesis that perio dicity pitch, presumably based on the temporal patterning of the stimuli, is represented at the cerebral cortex in terms of spacial patterning. Instead, the topical pattern of response ampli tude and latency seems directly related to the frequency spectrum of the acoustic stimulus. Author
