The cobalt-60 gamma radiolysis of liquid dinitrogen tetroxide N2O4l has been investigated as a function of variations in temperature, gas-to liquid volume ratio, dose rates, and method of N2O4l purification. The radiolytic products are shown to be N2, N2O, and N2O5. The material balance of the O2 released at post-irradiation thermal equilibrium as compared with the calculated O2 derived from the production of N2 and N2O from N2O4 is good to within 10. N2O4l is relatively radiation-resistant, having a G value of only 0.075, the ratio of N2 and N2O product formation being 21.
