Research was carried out to develop, on the basis of direct measurements, mathematical models suit able for describing the propagation of a compression shock wave through soils-principally through partly saturated clays. This interim report deals with the selection of a suitable type of laboratory test and with the design, calibration, and use of gages to measure stress and strain in the vicinity of a point during the propagation of a shock wave. Preliminary results from tests on samples of compacted clay are also included.
