Abstract:

Olivomycin, even in large doses, does not induce destructive changes in vitro in cells of the ascites form of the Ehrlich tumor. Upon exposure to this preparation, there is only a pronounced swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum. Krutsin in large doses causes, in vitro, changes in a certain percentage of the cells of the ascites form of the Ehrlich tumor. These changes are basically those of damage to the mitochondria swelling and lysis of the matrix, disruption of the christae and of the membranes, and also include a unique redistribu tion lamination and reduction in the concentra tion of ribenucleoproteins of the cell. These changes, to a certain degree, are distinct from those observed following exposure to the actinomycetes antibiotics. Only a comparison of the morphologic methods utilized will enable one to characterize the action of the test anti biotics on the tumor cell. Author
