A new process has been developed for the manufacture of styphnic acid 2,4,6-trinitroresorcinol. Resorcinol is treated with dilute nitric acid and sodium nitrite to give 2,4-dinitrosoresorcinol, and the latter is pumped as a slurry into hot concentrated nitric acid, in which it undergoes oxidation and nitration to yield styphnic acid 90 per cent. The process has been evaluated in collaboration with ROF, Bridgwater, and appears to be more convenient and economical than the conventional sulphonationnitration method.
