A review of scattering and echo formation by simple underwater targets is presented. Phenomena which are revealed by high time range resolution are emphasized. Bearing resolution is discussed in a context of space-frequency correlation. Echo strength is treated as a phenomenon of time and frequency resolution. It is intended to illustrate how echo structure may enhance or degrade a high resolution sonar display. Mechanisms of scattering and echo-formation, which are indicated or supported by measurements, are described. A bibliography of scattering and echo-formation by simple geometric targets is included.
