Abstract:

During May, June and July 1968 United States and Free World Military Forces FWMAF with 37 maneuver battalions 19 US and 18 ROK supported by 24 artillery battalions and Army Republic of Vietnam ARVN with 28 maneuver battalions supported by six artillery battalions continued operations in the II Corps Tactical Zone II CTZ. Operations were conducted in the west along the CambodianLaotianRepublic of Vietnam RVN border in Darlac, Pleiku and Kontum Provinces, and along the east coast in Binh Dinh, Phu Bon, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan Provinces, and in the south in Tuyen Duc, Lam Dong and Binh Thuan Provinces. As the quarter started military operations were offensive in nature and oriented toward the location and destruction of enemy forces, interdiction of enemy infiltration routes and surveillance of the western border. On the east coast, cordon and search operations to destroy enemy forces and support revolutionary development were emphasized. By early June the enemy forces, which had suffered several military defeats during May chose to avoid decisive contact throughout the zone. Increased reconnaissance operations geared to locating the enemy forces were partially successful however, where possible, the enemy continued his evasive tactics and refused to become engaged.
