Abstract:

A series of twelve oxygenated energetic plasticizer candidates for Domino binders has been prepared by combining nitroorganic and difluoramino-organic groups through ester, ether, carbonate or acetal linkages. Most of the preparations involved the solution addition of N2F4 to easily purified olefinic nitro compounds. The compound 2,3-bisdifluoraminopropyl 2,2-dinitropropyl carbonate, designated as P722, was chosen for further development on the basis of its high thermal stability, low vapor pressure, comparative insensitivity to impact and friction, good performance in cured systems, and ease of manufacture in a continuous unit. About 3 pounds have been prepared and distributed for evaluation. Several energetic nitriles have been prepared as plasticizer candidates for nitrocellulose. Of these, 4,4,4-trinitrobut-1-yl cyanoacetate, P731, was selected for further development. The compound appears to be insensitive to impact. P731 acts as a co-plasticizer for incorporating the difluoramino plasticizer P722 into nitrocellulose with the aid of small amounts of adiponitrile it is possible to prepare cured gumstocks having up to 15w of NF2 content.
