Abstract:

A series of perfluoroalkylene oxide polymers containing the OCF2CF2CF2CF2 unit has been developed. These show excellent low- and high-temperature properties the glass transition temperature for OCF2CF2CF2CF2n is below -65 C. -85 F., in differential thermal analysis in air or in nitrogen, no change is noted below 380 C. 716 F., and 10 weight loss in air is observed thermogravimetrically at 515 C. 959 F.. The density of polyperfluoroalkylene oxides permits one to achieve the minimum target density impulse of 510 seconds with a calculated specific impulse of over 240 seconds at a binder level at 27. The polyperfluoroalkylene oxides obtained in the earlier contract work had carboxyl-termination of at most about 1.0. Polyperfluoroalkylene oxides having acyl fluoride-, ester-, amide-, and carboxyl-termination greater than two have been prepared by the photopolymerization of oxygen-containing perfluorodiacyl fluorides. The present report describes continued work with such polymers. This report also describes curing studies on model compounds and prepolymers as well as the results of thermal and hydrolytic stability determinations on cured systems.
