Abstract:
Matrix fluorinations of HOCl synthesized in situ from HCl and O3 failed to produce the desired FxClO type compounds. Similarly, no new bands were observed after photolysis and diffusion in initial matrix fluorinations of the ClOO radical. Attempts to form the ClO radical from Cl2 N2O in a manner similar to the formation of the OF radical from F2 N2O were unsuccessful. Additional evidence on the dimer of the ClO radical, Cl2O2, indicates that its structure is probably ClOOCl with retention of ClO radical characteristics. Further investigation of the isomerization of OClO to give the ClOO radical indicates the existence of an intermediate with an infrared absorption at 1415 reciprocal centimeters. In connection with attempts to synthsize HOF, structural information is being obtained on HOCl and the previously unknown HOBr in hopes of determining whether the existence of HOF might be possible. Studies of O3F2 in a rigid matrix indicate that its structure is probably that of an OF radical in the same matrix cage with an O2F radical. Attempts to form ClONF2 and ClOONF2 from matrix reactions of ClNF2 with O2, O3 and ClO2 did not yield any evidence for the desired species. Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry have been applied to the low temperature matrix technique using model systems they will be used in future work to provide analytical data in addition to that of infrared spectroscopy.
