Abstract:

Beryllium hydride in purities up to 87.5 wt. was obtained from the disproportionation of ClBeHOEt2 in dimethylsulfide at 25 C. The purity of the CBH disporportionation product obtained in 1,2-dichloroethane was improved to 66.3 wt. BeH2 over a previous value of 34.1. Under certain conditions the ratio of active H to residual Cl reached 1431 corresponding to a purity of 95 wt. BeH2 based on residual BeCl2 as the only contaminant. The products were amorphous to X-ray. Retained ether remains a major contaminant. Complete removal of retained ether by thermal means could not be accomplished without causing some cleavage.
