Abstract:
The purpose of this program was to synthesize by fission-fragment radiolysis such unusual compounds as NOF3, CONF24, F2NOF, COF4 and NF5 which are expected to be useful, high-energy oxidizers that are more readily storable than those presently in use. Sixteen low-flux and eight high-flux irradiations were performed in the 19 months covered by this report. Mass-spectrometric and gas-chromatographic analyses indicated that several interesting and potentially useful products were produced, but none could be definitely identified. In particular, the repeated production of a material with an approximate boiling point of 238 K in the NF3-F2 experiments bears further study. A high-sensitivity gas chromatograph, capable of detecting ppm quantities of such reactive gases as FNO2 without causing decomposition, was developed during this program. Author
