Abstract:
Thirty-two drops were completed. Much difficulty was experienced during the first five drops due to inadequate waterproofing of the cannon connectors on the main instrumentation cable and also to strain gages at Station 285 and engine thrust beam not maintaining their bond. After the first drop many methods were unsuccessfully tried to waterproof the connectors. The connectors were completely covered with petrosene wax. Although the petrosene wax gave very little mechanical protection, the electrical insulating and waterproofing characteristics were excellent. An investigation as to why the strain gages did not remain bonded was conducted and revealed that silicon caused the gages to come unbonded. The source of the silicon was from the DC-4 that was used to waterproof the strain gage wiring. Drop No. 6 was considered the first drop to give both qualitative and quantitative data. Author
