Abstract:
Direct synthesis of dense BeH2 was attempted by thermal and chemical dissociation of complexes of BeH2 with alkyl derivatives of B and Al. Although BeH2 was produced in purities of 93 wt , only the low density, amorphous form was obtained. A new class of compounds, neutral tertiary amine complexes of BeH2, were prepared by heating pyrolytic with amines. Alkyl, cyclic and aromatic mono- and di-amines of suitable base strength and steric requirements formed complexes in high yield. The mono-amine adducts were white, crystalline solids, soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and amines. They exist as dimeric species in solution. The di-amine complexes were polymeric, insoluble in aromatic solvents and amines. The weak BeH2.amine complexes can be thermally dissociated to BeH2 of high purity, though amorphous. They represent attractive intermiates in the direct crystallization of BeH2. The trimethylamine adduct of BeH2 was prepared by dissociation of BeEt3AlH2 with trimethylamine. The preparation of the intermediate BeEt3AlH2 was accomplished in high yield. Dissociation of BeH42 was attempted. The highest purity obtained was 58 wt and amorphous. Author
