Abstract:

Data on the explosion limit of 1,2-DP are shown to be inconsistent with the concept of thermal explosion and to require interpretation in terms of a branched-chain mechanism. The chemical and kinetic evidence suggests a mechanism of the form NF2 DP yielding F non-reactive products NF2 DP yielding 3F non-reactive products F DP yielding NF2 non-reactive products NF2 DP yielding non-reactive products F yielding surface destruction mechanism. On the basis of this mechanism and the experimental data in spherical vessels of different diameters an equation was derived for describing the relation between the explosion pressure P measured in units of mm Hg and D measured in cm. The initiation mechanism in drop weight tests in interpreted in terms of heat transfer from adiabatically compressed gas in the sample volume to the explosive liquid. Data were obtained on the initiation of IBA using various gases in the sample volume. These data were correlated in terms of the temperature rise of the gas-liquid interface due to the impact of the drop weight. Author
