Abstract:

Organization, techniques of employment, performance and logistical support of an Army of the Republic of Vietnam ARVN platoon equipped with the M-106M-30 weapon system were evaluated in the Republic of Vietnam RVN. The platoon was observed as it engaged in training, maintenance, and combat operations from 16 September 1964 to 30 January 1965. For the most part, data were collected by ACTIV evaluators who personally observed combat operations. The evaluators prepared after-action reports which were analyzed by the case study method and supplemented by advisors and ARVN commanders after-action reports. The maintenance, supply and firing records kept by the platoon during the evaluation were also analyzed. It was found that the M-106M-30 system had the design and performance characteristics to provide excellent fire support to ARVN units, especially those operating in inundated areas which would not permit the use of ground mounted mortars. Certain organizational and employment techniques were in need of improvement to insure that the full capabilities of the M-106M-30 weapon system are fully exploited. The system can be supported by the current logistical establishment. The weapon should be introduced into Vietnam in sufficient quantity to provide each armored cavalry squadron with an organic M-106M-30 mortar platoon. Author
