A detailed description of the theoretical approach in developing an analysis of the Lockseal reinforcements is presented. Because of the difficulty in analyzing the buckling of this complex geometry, a modified approach to the problem was used to make the solution tractable. The approach combines a theoretical analysis based on an energy or variational principle with select experimental values. The theoretical analysis was developed in three stages to clarify the principles and technique used. The first stage involves the theoretical analysis of a simple strut under a buckling load this stage illustrates in its simplest form the energy principle utilized throughout the theoretical analysis. The second stage reduces the complex three-dimensional problem to an equivalent two-dimensional problem. A limited number of experimental values were determined, and the theoretical analysis was modified to give realistic results in predicting the critical buckling load. Design curves were generated based on the modified analysis. The third and final stage describes the three-dimensional buckling analysis in detail. The basic equations are stated mathematically, and numerical results from computer computations are given in the form of graphs. These graphs show the buckling pressures as a function of geometric and material parameters. Author
