Abstract:

A new process based on the oxidation of difluoramine by ferric ion was developed for the preparation of tetrafluorohydrazine for pilot-plant scale-up. Difluoramine, formed by hydrolysis of aqueous difluorourea, was passed through aqueous ferric chloride to effect the oxidation and the product was passed through aquous caustic to eliminate carbon dioxide, through aqueous ferrous chloride to remove nitric oxide, and finally through Drierite to remove water. Only minor amounts of impurities were present in the product these were nitrous oxide, difluorodiazine, and nitrogen. Product yields from difluorourea were approximately 90. Author
