Abstract:

Instrumented impact measurements indicate that increasing dilution of NG with TA results in increasing induction times, and decreasing burning rates. Deflagrations are seen to occur in each case with the pressure rising to its maximum in 0.6 ms - 4.0 ms depending upon the concentration. The maximum pressure developed in this apparatus is 100.000 psi, at which point the diaphragm bursts. A chemical examination of NG in contact with the rubber O-ring revealed that NG leaches material from the AN 6227-5 Buna-N O-rings. The objective of this program is to investigate the practicability of using FEFO bis-2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethyl formal or other energetic relatively insensitive compounds as desensitizers for NG in the processing of double base propellants.
