Abstract:

This report comprises the results of a field study on the microwave radiometric temperature differentials between typical battlefield targets and their backgrounds under various climatic and terrain conditions. The targets viewed include personnel, tanks, trucks, jeeps and napalm fires. Data was obtained during night and day conditions as well as during fog, rain and snow. Also, target signatures were taken when the tank was obscured by smoke, camouflage and vegetation. To simulate observations of a missile borne guidance seeker, tank targets simulate observations of a missile borne guidance seeker, tank targets were viewed with the radiometer at elevation angles approaching 45 degrees. This report includes the test data, a discussion of results, conclusions and recommendations for further research and development.
